The New York Times

Senior Editor, Editing Residency 2021-Present

I work with eight early career journalists learning the craft of editing in a two-year residency at The New York Times. Recruit, hire, and train editors for the residency.

Writing Coach and Editor 2020-2021

I served as writing coach for early career journalism fellows at The New York Times. I worked one-on-one with fellows, who were stationed in different departments throughout the newsroom, and I also designed and taught journalism classes.

Washington City Paper

Editor 2017–2020
Managing Editor 2016–2017

I managed a newsroom of ten journalists while working intensively on stabilizing the business operations of a struggling big-city alt weekly. I edited a cover story of about 4,000 words each week; directed coverage of local arts, politics, housing, food, sports, education, and public health; and hosted public discussions on City Paper’s reporting areas.

MIT Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, Community Innovators Lab

Director of Media Projects 2008–2013

I edited a journal of opinion and first-person stories about city and regional planning. Contributors were people who had dedicated their lives to planning and community development. I also designed courses and taught media production in MIT’s city planning department.
